Christian Michael Lowry
Christian Lowry is a senior at Xavier University, majoring in the Philosophy Politics & The Public Honors Program as well as History. A native of Northern Kentucky, Christian is interested in local politics, particularly regarding public transportation. He is currently working on a project in the city of Cincinnati promoting the implementation of a modern streetcar system in the downtown area and hope to continue his work on local policy initiatives after graduation. Christian plans to attend graduate school in the fall after graduation, studying either law, international affairs or urban planning.
Christian was a Brueggeman Fellow during the spring semester of 2007, and traveled in August of 2007 to Berlin, Germany and Istanbul, Turkey to complete the research portion of his project. Christian’s project studied the socio-political and religious consequences of Muslim (particularly Turkish) immigration into Western Europe. While abroad, Christian interviewed college students, civic leaders and academics in an attempt to better understand the nuances of life as a European Muslim, and alternatively, life as a ‘modern’ secular Muslim. This experience as a Brueggeman Fellow has expanded Christian’s conception of what it means to live in a modern liberal democracy, with all of the rights and responsibilities associated with it. As social, cultural, political and religious identities rapidly converge upon one another as a result of global interaction, the meanings of terms such as ‘freedom’, ‘equality’ and ‘rights’ change just as quickly. The opportunity Christian had as a Brueggeman Fellow let him see those changes first-hand, and to better understand the impact that they will have on the future.
