When people ask me where I am from I can’t answer that question. I was born in Central Asia in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. It is used to be a part of USSR. Later my family moved to Ukraine and I have been traveling with in the country as well as going to Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. In 2001 I moved to Moscow, Russia and spent one year there. I have changed about 7 or 8 schools, and my high school education was partially in Crimea, Ukraine and Tashkent, Uzbekistan. My father is Azerbaijani with heritage from Iran and my mother is half Turkish and half Crimean Tatar. I have a two year younger brother, who is now in Baku, Azerbaijan studying in Architectural University. He lives with my father, who spends most of the time in China in business trips. My mother is here in the US. I go home every summer (home is all the countries I used to live in) and it helps me to not forget my native culture.
After I finished my high school, I applied to Xavier (my mom’s friends live in Cincinnati and they advised my parents to give me an education abroad) and got accepted. I spent one year on the ESL program due to new language exposure. After finishing ESL, I applied for the International Grant and started my bachelor education. My major is International Affairs, but I always was interested in Fine Arts (high school that I finished was for Arts majors only), and that became just a hobby.
What I Think I Want To Do
Unlike many students here in the U.S., I knew what I want to do since I was in middle school. I always wanted to be a lawyer; however, my interest in Immigration Law developed in the U.S. I am very social and active person. Since I came to the U.S. and my English was acceptable to make the translations, I have been translating in Hamilton County Immigration Court. During that time I have met many Lawyers practicing in Immigration Law as well as Judges and prosecutors (our usual prosecutor, Veronica Cromwell, is very moody person). Right now I am planning to become a notary public, and I already contacted Cincinnati Bar Association; I am preparing for exam during summer break. After finishing my bachelor degree, I am planning to attend Law School; therefore I need to start preparing for the LSAT, which I have not started yet.
Moreover, right now I am really interested in Middle Eastern Politics and Culture as well as Islam and Arabic language (I took a course last semester and am taking another one this semester). I became a member of the Brueggman Fellowship, and we are trying to educate Xavier Students more about Islam and cultures (traditions) related to it.
